Chemotherapy and side effects

What are the side effects of Chemotherapy? Is thromboflebitis one of them?

by Cleveland Clinic, Nov 19, 2007 09:27AM
Dear MarianaB,   When talking about chemotherapy we are talking about a general term which refers to over 100 different types of medications used in the treatment of cancer.  We are referring you to a website called Chemocare.com.  (www.chemocare.com)  On this website you can find information about the medication itself, side effects as well as management strategies.

Thrombophlebitis is a swelling in the vein caused by a clot.  If the affected vein is just beneath the skin, the condition is usually not dangerous. A clot in a deeper vein, called deep vein thrombosis, can break loose and cause a serious problem in the lung, called a pulmonary embolism, heart attack or stroke.  There are some chemotherapy medications can increase a persons risk for deep vein thrombosis.

Until the nurse posts tomorrow I thought I would let you know that I got a superficial thrombo-phlebitis in the breast where I had cancer. It was a long ropey string type lump in the upper part of my breast, my tumour was under the aureola. It is called Mondor's disease, when in the breast. My bc surgeon said it has nothing to do with cancer, but he has never seen it in a patient with breast cancer, but has seen it otherwise, so I presume it has nothing to do with chemotherapy. I had 6 x FEC chemo's and didn't get the thrombo-phlebitis until 2 yrs after chemo.  If you google Mondor's disease you will get more technical information than I can give you.  Hope this helps.
Liz.
