My toddler is getting a lot of bruises

by hodtek, Nov 19, 2007 03:27PM
My toddler is 2-1/2 and she has been getting a lot of small injuries over the past few months (about 6 months), mostly bumps, bruises and scrapes.

I noticed that they are almost always on the "right" side.  Could this be a developmental thing?  I know that children develop their "handedness" very young, is it possible that she has developed a clear preference for the "right" but her motor skills just haven't caught up yet?

Could this be the reason for the seemingly constant minor injuries to her right side??

Is there any medical evidence (or studies) that would back this up?

While it's true that children are famous for bumps and bruises, it seems strange that it would be limited to one side. I have never heard or seen any evidence that motor skill development could cause a child's injuries to favor one side. It sounds like you are worried about your daughter's frequent accidents. It is always best to follow your "motherly instincts". Is it possible a caregiver or family member could be abusing your child? You owe it to your daughter, as well as yourself to investigate further. Talk with the other adults who spend time alone with her, document the injuries, talk with her pediatrician, and most importantly, talk with your daughter directly. She may only be 2 years old, but she will tell you if something is wrong. Remember, you are responsible for your child's safety! Never take the "let's not overreact" approach.

could be  a growth spirt.  My daughter would run into walls and fall all over the place when she was going through one. She is now 5 and is fine. Maybe your child just tends to fall on the same side is all. If you are still worried i would check with the Pediatrition
