Sudden onset of diabetes

Following my sister's hysterectomy 8 weeks ago, she has suddenly developed diabetes, weight loss, poor liver function, high tryglyceride count and is unable to eat properly. Do you think that possibly this could be due to a blockage in pancreatic duct following her operation? She does not drink alcohol and does not have gallstones. We'd be very happy to hear you view as we are very worried. Thanks

Hi,
I am not a surgeon(caveat here) but I do not think her pancreatic duct should have been damaged by this surgery, or otherwise affected by the procedure itself.  For some people, a severe stress can precipitate underlying glucose problems, so it is possible that your sister had some mild glucose abnormalities before the surgery and this tipped her over. It is also important to ensure she does not have an infection. Her condition sounds like it certainly needs close attention, so in addiiton to following up with her GYN, she should see an Endocrinologist is her area as soon as possible for further testing.
take care.
