Mid sentence vocal interruption

My partner, a 58 y/o male, has been exhibiting this symptom for at least a year. I have suggested he mention it to his physician, but as he doesn't realize he is doing it he refuses to take it seriously.
It happens most often at night, frequently after dinner. We will be conversing normally, and he will start to tell me something when in mid-sentence he will suddenly stop vocalizing. His lips will continue to move, and when I interrupt him and ask him to repeat what he just said he is totally unaware that he had stopped talking. He will generally insist that he completed his sentence.
He had a very complete physical about six months ago after an extended respiratory infection, and was tested for just about everything, but as I said he doesn't take my reports of this behavior seriously and did not mention it to his PCP.
Any ideas of what might be causing this, and how do I convince him to have this diagnosed?

Consult an ENT surgeon,maybe his vocal chords are affected.Do a investigation with an speech therapist.
