The barking sound followed by intensive wheezing, vomiting, shortness of breath and a bluish tint on the face is a sign of whooping cough. Unfortunately a lot of doctors do not diagnose this because most have not treated it before. treatment wise, it is said that antibiotics may help in the early stages. There is hope - after the cough goes through the 3 stages, it does get better. There is also a link that asthma sufferers are more prone to whooping cough. The cough is caused by a bacteria, which can be tested for. Look for more info on the web e.g  www.whoopingcough.net
