meningitis relapse?

by Berzerker778, Nov 22, 2007 07:29PM
I was diagnosed with meningitis about five years ago after comming back from south america on a cruise.  I went to the hospital with a high fever (about 106), severe dehydration, and headache so bad i couldnt stand or see.  They gave me a spinal tap and it concluded that i had a type of meningitis.  The doctor didnt really know whether it was bacterial or viral or jsut told me so because he didnt want me to know.... anyway it took me a long while(around 3 months) to completely "recover" from it.  But i still got the headaches.  About 2 years ago we were comming back home from Myrtle Beach and I relapsed.  The day was a blur of pain, the headaches were so bad, the fever never stopped and i was throwing up.  We didnt stop at the hospital.  Supposedly it was suggested...but the suggestion was denied by the head of the family....it took me a week before i was feeling better......but even now i live with severe headaches that start where my spine meets my skull, it swells and then it goes through my sinuses to encompass my entire head....i just need some advice about what i should do...... can anyone help?

Hi,
Repeat a spinal tap and confirm if it is meningitis again.I dont think it could be,anyway if it is meningitis treat it at once ,completely,I dont the reason why it relapsed. It the results of the spinal tap is 'Normal' I would advice an CT/MRI to look for some neuro problems.Meet the orthopaedician also to check for a disc prolapse at the neck level ,that could be a possibility.
Goodluck.

It would have been ideal if you were brought to the hospital to immediately treat your condition.  Your symptoms do suggest meningitis, especially with the fever, headache and vomiting, but nothing is certain as you never underwent any diagnostic procedures for your most recent condition.

You need to consult a neurologist as soon as possible.  He/she would be able to assess if your condition is related to meningitis, a cervical spine condition, or some other disease.
