stroke and heart attack

by Alea524, Nov 23, 2007 11:22AM
My grandmother, 94 years old suffered a stroke about 3 weeks ago. Doctor said it was a stroke and heart attack. However immediately after the stroke she started to complain about pain in left arm. When we looked at the arm, 80% of the arm was purple- black color. However it starts to  lose the color now and it is more pink. Anyway she is under medication and she sleeps all the time. We feed her and she used to eat pretty well. However starting with yesterday she can't really swallow. Also she has Alzheimer. Any suggestions?
thank you
Alea

Hello, my name is Pam.  Your grandmother has dysphagia.  It's where she has difficulty swallowing and very common after a stroke.  She will be fed through a tube and when she gets better she'll be put on pureed food and then when her lungs become strong again she'll eat regular food.  She'll also have to have all her liquids thickened until her lung muscles become strong again.
