Should I get another Endo?

by infoRN, Nov 26, 2007 11:17AM
I saw my endo for the first time last week for hyperthyroidism (TSH <0.019, FT4 2.9 and TPO AB 4.09 (ranges 0.0-0.75). My uptake was also increased. I have a few symptoms, but as far as my eyes go, I get pain in them in the morning and that's about it. I was also having tachycardia and SOB on exertion.
Anyway, she was extremely short with me and seemed put out that I refused to choose RAI as a treatment. She put me on 5mg Tapazole BID and told me to get my CBC, Renal panel, FT4 and TSH checked in one month. She refused to refer me to an ophthamologist for a baseline of my eyes and she refused to do a TSI. I asked her how she was sure that I have Graves and not Hashimoto's and she said that because my TSH was fine last year, then I must have Graves as I would have been hypo for some time.
I don't care for her at all...does anything think the advice she gave me is OK or should I start looking for someone new?

A T3 in conjunction would have defferciented between Hashi and Graves.  However your increased uptake suggest Graves'.
If you do have TED, there is nothing a ophthamologist can do but take the wait and see approach until the hot phrase is over and you are in the cold phase.  If you are concerned you can get a old photo with close up and keep comparing your eyes to it.  If you see worsening than ask for  referral to ophthalmologist's.  Mean while,  she is treating you, however you have a right to a second opinion or a new doctor, if you are not HMO.

Good luck - don't stress with this for stress is not good for autoimmune thyroid.
