Asthma, headaches, hearing voices, what is going on?

by 24Angel, Nov 27, 2007 11:51PM
My 13 year old niece has asthma and about 1 month ago she started getting asthma attacks and probably anxiety attacks too.  The doctor prescribed Prednisone(steroids) to help with the asthma and headaches. Then he gave her
about a week later Alprazolam for the anxiety attacks.
After she started taking both drugs she began feeling tired, sleepy, fatigued, with more headaches, pain or numbing on both legs and some memory loss and the worst symptom now is that she is hearing a mans voice in her head telling her to kill her mom. She says his name is micheal and she hears him yelling at his wife for the death of their baby. She doesn't see him but she hears him and it has been happening often now. Today we took her to see a doctor and he said it could be the the drugs that were prescribed to her because she has no history of mental illness and she's always been healthy and normal.  When we got home from seeing the doctor she said she heard the voice(Micheal) say to her that the Doctor was crazy and to go kill him.  I'm so worried about this certain voice in her head telling her to do bad things. Could it really be a bad reaction to the Prednisone or Alprazolam?
Please help if you think you know what might be going on.

Thanks!

Good lord! I am so sorry that all of you are going through this. As far as having psychotic problems with the meds, I have seen this first hand with prednisone. I took care of one lady who absolutely freaked out on the high doses of prednisone (I was a nurse). It isn't a real common side effect but it happens. The times I was on prednisone, I was overly moody and had a serious case of the munchies. When I was on it long term, I had really bad fluid retention to the point of needing diuretics to reduce the accumulating fluids in my legs and hands. That was long term, short term doesn't usually do that to you. Importantly, what is the doc doing for your niece now that she is having these psychotic episodes? Is she coming off of the steroids? As far as her lethargy and sleeping all of the time, that could be from the alprozolam (Xanax is the brand name). It is in a class of medicine called benzodiazapines...they do reduce anxiety but also have the side effects of sonmolence. This poor kid definitely needs some tweaking of her meds, that much is obvious. I will keep all of you in my thoughts, Sunny
