6 year old with school issues

by Kaseyjcf, Nov 29, 2007 06:31AM
Hi, I have a very sweet 6 year old granddaughter. She has epilepsy, was diagnosed at age 3 and has been med free and seizure free for about a year now. She was taken off her meds almost a year ago but is having alot of behavior issues, especially at school. She will get out of her seat and actually leave the classroom. She is very noisy, refuses to do her work unless she gets indiviidual help, she does get remedial speech therapy. Her attention span is not good, it has been suggested by one school therapist she may have ADHD. However, most meds which is usually the treatment of choice for ADHD bring on seizures and this is of course an issue for this child. We obviously cannot take the chance of her getting seizures again. I feel real bad for her teacher and the other children in the class. She says she hates school and I really believe she does. She is so unhappy. Could the epilepsy cause the behavior problems, could it have caused developmental delays and what can we do to help her? My son and his wife have asked if she is a candidate for an individual aide for her. The school has had so many budget  cutbacks because of lack of school funding that they tend to waffle over this. I thiink she needs a new evaluation, ie her IEP to determine what are the issues with this child and how they can help her. I sure could use some feed back as how to approach this situation. Thanks and blessings to all who read this and respond.
