Symptoms of DS

by sonny348, Nov 29, 2007 03:24PM
Hello, I'm pregnant at 41 with my husband's first child.  I had two abnormal ultrasounds.  They stated that the baby had poor growth and a thick neck.  I have never heard of this.  My mothers think I should wait to see what the outcome would be.  I'm confused because the doctors are positive that something is wrong with my baby. Once week after my ultrasound they scheduled me for surgery because they were sure the baby was not going to have a heart beat.  The following day the heartbeat was strong and health.   I heard the symptoms for DS could be mild or strong.  I don't know what to do.

You didn't say how far along you are in this pregnacy, at 41 your chances of having a DS are about 1 in 20,  by saying you don't know what to do, do you mean carry through this pregnacy and if the baby is DS. accept and raise the child?  I was 40 when my son was born,  he did have a heart murmur that worried us at first but with growth  that disappeared.  He is now 37 and a great guy.  I was blessed to have him as a member of our family.  Yes the thick neck is one of the signs in-utero that can be seen with US, but it also a sign of a fat baby. The amneocentesis would tell you for sure.  Altho the amnio can cause damage to the baby.  I cannot tell you how to handle this, it must be your deceasion, but I will tell you not to be afraid of having a DS, they are more alike "normal" children than they are different.  Good Luck

I had my son at age 43. He has DS. He is the most wonderful kid I know. Of course I am his mother. But so cute too. If I knew how to upload a picture on my profile I would. He looks alot like his brother. Only I dont' think he will ever break my heart like his brother has with his lifestyle. He is such a prayer warrior. Very sensitive and happy.(not "always happy" as some think though.)
