Fast Acting Carbs

by KevinHarney, Nov 29, 2007 10:36PM
I am a 40 yr old Type 1 diabetic diagnosed about 5 yrs ago.  I currently exercise for 1 hour 3 x week.  Running.  I need to take in 30 g of fast acting Carbs before my workout to keep levels normal before during and after my workout.  I am currently taking 7 4g tablets but that is kind of a pain in the @#$%.  Is there a better or simplier way to keep levels normal?  The sugar tablets do tend to upset my stomach when I am working out but not majorly.

Hi,
You can also try juices(like OJ) along with a small snack before working out.  The juice will give the iniyial boost while the small snack will give some sustained carb during the latter part of the workout. A patient of mine was a long distance cyclist, also Type 1, and he drank sports drinks to keep up with fluid loss and provide fast-acting carb but added something heavier like crackers or energy bars, and that worked quite well.
Hope this helps,
Take care.

Thanks for the comment.  My question really centers on the fact that if I eat or drink before I workout it is the old heave ho for what I ate.  Is there anything I can take that would be like a glucose shot or somethingof that nature?  That would be very precise and not upset my stomach.
