how long to wait to get pg after miscarriage?

by Rebecca1978, Nov 30, 2007 02:53PM
I recently had a miscarriage - I was only about 5 weeks (my luteal phase for that pg was 17 days before I started bleeding). I went to the doctor at 17dpo and my HCG was at 7.6. Two days later it was at 3.2. Needless to say, it was over very quickly - two days of bleeding, two days of spotting. The nurse told us to wait 3 cycles before ttc'ing again. I really want to start right away. I've heard that some people don't wait at all. If I hadn't been charting and so aware, I might not have even know and just would have thought it was a long cycle (37 days). How long should I really wait?

I had a m/c on Aug 7th and bleed for about 7 days... I was waiting and waiting for a period after that.  (dh decided we should wait until feb to ttc so I was going to get an iud) but I never had af... I just thought the m/c threw things off... well on sept 15 I swore I was pg... and took a hpt and got a super faint pos... I went in 2 days later for hcg of 11.5 and am now 14w... so I didn't wait at all...  and all seems to be going well with this baby... I think that things are different if you have a late m/c when the baby and uterus and placenta is more advanced...  my advice.. just be normal bd like normal and if it happens it happens... unless you are doing meds... then I guess you have to get dr. on board.  good luck

No meds, just bd'ing. I have an almost 2 year old daughter, and we conceived her on our first month ttc'ing, so I don't think I have any fertility issues (unless they have come up since her conception/birth). I just feel badly going against my doctor's advice. Maybe I should call the office again and press them on the issue? Or get a second opinion?

Not everyone has to wait.....My Dr. told me I just needed to wait for my period and the go right back to trying and he told me we could even resume sex 2 weeks after my D&C and no need for protection cause if I got pregnant then I just do......so I think it's ok to start whenever you are emmotionally ready.  I was ready as soon as I could.   And mommyofonetrying42 is pregnant again and this was her first cycle since her MC.

It seems like it's just a matter of your own doctor's opinion.  There doesn't seem to be any written rule saying you have to wait X amount of days after a miscarriage.  I just recently had a m/c on 11/20 (I was @ 7 weeks... had to take meds to initiate m/c since the baby stopped growing).  For me, the doc recommended we wait one full cycle.  So I can't try again until January... however, I need to use injectable meds to make my body ovulate, so I really can't try on my own w/o the docs assistance/prescription.
Anyway... my point is if you are able to conceive on your own, and you feel comfortable trying sooner than 3 cycles, you have every right in the world to do so (keep in mind that depending on your doc, he might be annoyed that you didn't obey his wishes.. but then in that case, you can always find a different doc).

Good luck!

I just had a miscarriage and the doc said to wait one cycle.

I wouldn't wait unless the doctor can give you a specific reason.  Yahoo Health has some info on pregnancy after miscarriage.  It was encouraging to me to find that doctors usually want you to wait just so they can more accurately guess how far along you are.....not enough of a good reason for me!

All this said, if you do not wait at least one period, you will always wonder if you are prego because you won't really be sure about when the next period is....

I think it is your call. I havn't found that there is any more chance of miscarriage by conceiving to early.

NovemberHope - that's one reason they gave me: it was to easier date a pregnancy if I did get pg right away. But I chart my temps and use OPKs, so I would know the exact day I ovulated. The other was something about hormones getting back to normal, but my HCG was so low that I wouldn't think that would matter. I just don't know... My head is saying that I should wait since it's only one cycle. But my heart is telling me to just do it! I want to be pg so bad and I don't want to miss an opportunity.
