how common and safe is FILMS SURGERY when Macular Pucker occurred after Cateract surgery    (on 6-25-07) with addition feature of having a "multi-focal" lens implant.  Vision is now blurred and double- had 2 glasses fittings in mid-Nov. but still can not read- disgusting. Where is best place to have surgery near Dayton, Ohio?  Appreciate your input on this.  Thanks

I had a epiretinal membrane (AKA macular pucker) peeled in 2006.  (It was unrelated to cataract surgery, although the retinal surgery caused a cataract to form.)  Before my retinal surgery, I did a lot of online research.  From what I learned, the FILMS surgical technique is rarely used outside the Alabama hospital where it was developed, but it gets a lot of search engine hits.  My retinal surgeon did not seem to think much of it.

I think you want a retinal surgeon who is very experienced peeling ERMs.  (You certainly don't want a resident, fellow, or surgeon who has been practicing for only a year or two.)  I found my retinal surgeon by using the directory at www.castleconnolly.com, where doctors are listed according to peer nominations.  Unfortunately, this directory focuses mostly on doctors practicing in large metro areas, like NYC, LA and Chicago.  If you have a good ophthalmologist, maybe s/he can make recommendations for you.  Ask him/her who they would want to see themselves or send a family member to see.

As JodieJ wrote, be careful of FILMS surgical procedure. You probably want another procedure. Search for a retinologist at aao.com. American academy of ophthalmologists. Ask the doctor 's office what surgical procedure is used, before you go in.

Ask the doctor here about the different types of surgery.

What have you done about your MP?  I'm curious as I received very little feed back on my original ? except to see a "good" Retina specialist which goes without saying.   The  FILMS procedure was being done in Birminghan as I  read about it on one of my internet searches on  MP surgery.  Hope to hear back from you and good luck.
