Genital Herpes From Internal Ultrasound??

by helppleeze, Dec 04, 2007 02:14PM
Please help i am afraid.

I am 11 weeks pregnant.
I had an external then an internal ultrasound 7 days ago.

A couple of days ago i noticed a blister type sore close to the enterance of my vagina.
A day or so later a started to get the feeling that the flu was creeping up on me. This developed in to chills and horrible aches and pains yesterday. Then last night i had a fever of 102. The aches and pains have continued today.

Because of the sore on my vagina, i did some std research on the internet and found that the symptoms that i have, seem to be very similar to those of a 'first outbreak' of genital herpes.
-fever 102
-aches and pains (particularly buttocks and legs)
-sores on vagina
-headaches
so far i have not experienced and unusual discharge....... i hope that wont happen.

My real question is:
Is it possible that i contracted this from the internal ultrasound. The nurse/radiologist did place a condom type cover over the "probe," but i did not have any of these issues before i had the internal ultrasound.

I have been married for 7 years and both my husband and i are monogomous types.

The only other thing i can think of is that my husband has had what appears to be a small cold sore in the corner of his mouth. But we have not been sexually active for at least couple of weeks.

Thank you in advance for any help

Did you already have all of the STD testing? It sounds coincidental but I would make a call to your OB

I highly highly doubt it is from the ultrasound.  In fact that is pretty much impossible since they used the probe cover.  Have you had anymore blisters?  I would DEFINITELY get it checked out by the OB.  If it is genital herpes they usually deliver by c-section if you are having an outbreak, otherwise they like you to take antivirals around the time of delivery (my friend had this happen to her).  Herpes can be dormant for a long time - is it possible either you or your dh had it prior to your marriage and didn't have another outbreak until now?  Just a thought.

Thank you for your response.
I have not yet had any of the routine pregnancy std testing, I think that is next visit.

One of my reasons for thinking that the internal ultrasound may be responsible for this is that i have real trouble believing in coincidences....and as mentioned the symptoms seem to be synonymous with a "first time outbreak" i am really not sure where else i would get this from.

is herpes something that can be contracted through inanimate objects?? i wonder

I will be making a call to my OB though.

thanks for your response.
Like i mentioned the symptoms that i have are synonymous with a "first time outbreak" re-occurent outbreaks are not acompanied with a fever of 102 or aches and pains etc. just the sores, frm what i have read.

This is a useful website for anyone who suspects that they may have genital herpes or any std for that matter:

Are you allergic to latex?  That would give you a reaction if the cover on the probe is latex.  Also, an oral cold sore is a different virus then the genital variety.

you sound like you are having your first outbreak of genital herpes. And NO, the herpes virus that is most common for coldsores(type 1) is not different than the herpes virus that can cause genital herpes.............The same virus, either strain( 1 or 2) can also be transmitted to the genital region very easily so the info. chiromom wrote is not correct. It is a common misconception but both type 1 and type 2 can affect either region: genital or oral. It is very likely you contracted type 1 genital herpes from your husbands coldsores and are just now finally having your first outbreak. Def. see your doc. asap. He is only contagious some of the time from his oral region (regardless of a coldsore present or not....asymptomatic shedding occurs in the oral region, just as it does for a genital infection but most people have no clue about this)  and a simple blood test for him will tell him if he has herpes of either type and a blood test for you as well will tell you. If the blood test for you is negative at first, and then positive in a repeat test in a few weeks/months, then you will know it was recently acquired from your husband. So it is good to be tested twice if negative at first.
