Post Concussion Syndrome

I suffered a mild concussion in July 2007 and am still currently experiencing symptoms of dizziness, inability to concentrate, sensitivity to light/noise, and the primary symptom (that seems to be the most debilitating) is a sensation that I am always in a 'dream'. This PCS has now persisted for 5 months and although symptoms have SOMEWHAT diminished, I am concerned with the time it is taking to get better. I am currently doing my masters in virology in England and am finding it difficult to concentrate and focus. I must add that I am a very active individual and have been running since the incident... all the neurologists that I spoke with did not advise against mild physical activity and actually thought it might help with my balance issues. Do you think this activity may be preventing my recovery or could I have done damage that cannot be counteracted by being physically active?  My symptoms do not seem to be exacerbated with physical activity. Although I must add then when I am extra tired, or stressed my 'dreaminess' is intensified as well as my dizziness AND my hands tremble. Is there ANYTHING I can do to ensure that I do get better? I am willing to go to any lengths to aid in my recovery as I am SO scared that I may never get better... living in this 'dream' for 5 months is absolute torture and I am desperate for any advice you may have. Thanks very much.

Hi again.

I think running 5 miles at a jogging pace is absolutely healthy. You have to do something called as "regulated exercise." You will have to make an individualized exercise program, may be with the help of a sports teacher (coach). It should be controlled. It improves blood circulation in the brain and helps recover from PCS faster. Contact any Sports Medicine Department at a nearby medicine and ask for the "regulated exercise" program.

Hope that helps.

Hi.

I do understand your situation. Right now, you are worried whether it will get better or not. You have good news. Even though it's 5 months, some patients are known to recover by six months or one year.

Mild activity is good. You may continue it. Just avoid one more concussion !
And keep the faith.

All the best.
