frequent cough/pain in back

by cp62, Dec 05, 2007 03:11AM
Dear Dr. My 10 yr old dtr has been coughing since Sept 07. After 3 weeks, saw the pediatrician, lungs were clear, chalked it up to allergies, tried Zyrtec, helped a little (30%). She has never had allergies her whole life. Now we have moved to Belgium, cough no better. Saw MD, did spirometry, peak flow okay, no signs of asthma. Dtr says some pain in mid back; says she cannot "feel her breath" at times.  I  can hear occasional expiratory wheeze with stethoscope, (clear at time of dr's visit). She also had a fever and sore throat 2 weeks ago and again one month ago or so. No throat pain or redness nor fever now. Dr thinks possibly allergies irritating lungs or post viral infection irritation. Started on Singulair 2 days ago. After one month, if no improvement, will do labs to determine if allergen causing this and also if mycoplasmic pneumonia a factor. Her sister had that 2 years ago and had pain in back when breathing (but was quite ill compared to this). MD also thinks potentially, maybe she is stressed and not breathing deeply enough  which is why she cannot feel her breath (adjusting to move from USA to Belgium); may have to see kinesiologist (I assume similar to PT) to teach breathing techniques. What are your thoughts? Are we on the right track? Thanks for your time.
