Copper Deficiency?? (Anyone have any insight?? - Please Help!)

by Dreynolds, Dec 05, 2007 07:52AM
25 y/o, otherwise healthy male.  I think I may be copper deficient, and that it may be causing joint pain (most specifically in the knuckle joints closest to my fingernails...DIP joints).  I started taking zinc supplements about 3 months or longer ago,  for no real reason other than I am an idiot haha.  At the same time, I was, and still am, taking a Multi-Vitamin.  In total, I was getting 65 mgs of supplemental zinc/day.  this DOES NOT include dietary zinc, so probably in total getting over 80 mg/day.  Wayyy too much.

I think this caused me to become copper defcicient, which led to the afforementioned joint pain (in addition to tiredness).  The joint pain started about 1 month or more after I had been taking the zinc.  No swelling, redness, or any arthritic symptoms, just generalized pain in the joints.

I trashed the zinc about a week ago.  Still on the MV for the copper (2 mg of copper in MV, MV also has zinc in it though).

How long does it take to get back to a normal level after a copper deficiency??  Will this correct the joint pain (which seems to have stabalized a little, though it is still there) or could that be irreversible?

I won't be able to go to the doc for at least another 1.5 weeks, if not more with the holidays coming up.  Will they think I am crazy re: the copper deficiency?  If they test, will the deficiency still show up in the testing by that point?

ANY help that ANYONE may have is welcome.  THANKS!!
