Breathing problems

by gavinsims, Dec 06, 2007 07:41AM
Hi all,
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. Recently I have been having some breathing problems. The strange thing is though they never happen during the day. They happen at night, and it's always around the early morning hours. I wake up around 2/3/4am finding it very hard to breathe in, almost gasping for air, and it's pretty wheezy when I do breathe in. I sit up, and when it feels a bit better I lie back down, then it's almost as if I can feel my breathing gradually getting worse until I'm almost gasping for air again. It goes on for an hour or so until I fall asleep and then I wake up feeling fine. This has been happening for a few months, it used to be about one a week, now it happens about 2-3 times a week. I'm a 27 year old male, I do smoke (with rolling tobacco) about 10 cigarettes a day. Can anyone offer any advice please.

With your doctor I would make sure to request a referal to a cardiologist. Also see about getting an EKG. Do you wake up with a cough? Do you cough anything up. Do you have any other symptoms like chest pain, headache, nausea, fever. Those are all things your doctor will want to know. This could be many things some of which could be serious and some fairly benign. Pneumonia, Bronchitis. Or some disease processes with more serious implications like heart failure, COPD or other cardiac problems. Those are not usually seen in someone your age. I hope this scare helps you to stop smoking.

Good luck

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Had to reschedule my doctor to tomorrow. But I don't have any other symptoms, sometimes a little cough. And I am giving up smoking in the new year :)  Mean it this time as well.
