I'm five weeks pregnant and I'm in my first pregnancy.  I am spotting today, and it is brown in color.  Is this anything to worry about?

Hello,

Bleeding in early pregnancy can be quite common, occurring in 20 to 40 percent of pregnant women. It may be any combination of light or heavy, intermittent or constant, painless or painful.  Early bleeding may be the result of an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of the uterus, threatened or impending miscarriage, implantation of the pregnancy (your too far along for this), or cervical, vaginal, or uterine causes.

In normal pregnancies inside the uterus we often never learn the true cause of early bleeding.

You should see a physician to review any risk factors you may have, perform a physical exam, and pelvic ultrasound and to check your blood type and any other necessary labs (e.g., hCG, CBC).

Best of luck,

Dr. Downing
