Prodrome: anxiety

by kristocat, Dec 06, 2007 12:48PM
I experience extreme anxiety for about 3-4 hours a day or two before an outbreak.  I understand that stress and anxiety can be a trigger, but I normally don't experience either. It's an irrational bout of anxiety during which I feel a terrible sense that my life is dire and overwhelming. I started documenting the episodes since they seemed to random.  It's like PMS times 10. Sure enough, it has happened three times just before an outbreak. I can't find anything on the net about this prodromal symptom. Is there anything I can do to prevent it? Are there any articles on this? Thanks!

Anxiety is not considered a prodromal symptom. Talk to a health care provider about anti-anxiety medication. Prodromal symptoms are physical: i.e., tingling, itching, burning, perhaps radiation of pain down one extremity, etc.

The chances are good that your anxiety is not "bringing on" your herpes outbreaks. It's coincidental. Just because they occur at about the same time, or consecutively, doesn't mean one is related to the other.

But do something about the anxiety. Try relaxation techniques; better yet, get out and get some exercise. You'll whip your body into shape at the same time that you will alleviate anxiety. Studies have shown that exercise helps with mild anxiety symptoms. Worse comes to worse, get medication for it.
