Conflicting Diagnosis

by Ennample, Dec 07, 2007 08:49AM
Based on a fine needle biopsy, my pathology report revealed that the nodules on my thyorid are characteristic of papillary thyroid carcinoma.  My endocrinologist informed me that I needed to schedule and initial consultation with a surgeon because there is a 90 to 95% chance that it is cancer.   My blood test reveal that my thyroid is operating properly and that I have a mild goiter.

As my doctor suggested, I met with a surgeon who specializes in thryoid surgery.  He informed me that the pathology report is wrong and that I can relax, especially since I have no symptoms.  He states that he consulted with his Chief and she confirms his findings.  He is however, scheduling me for an additional biopsy in June just to re-confirm his findings.

For someone who has never been sick, the initial diagnosis was a shock.  So as you can imagine, I have been on an emotional roller coaster.  Is this type of conflict common?  I did schedule another consultation with a different doctor and hospital.  What and who am I supposed to believe? Is there any advise on what to do next in this situation?  Should I get all of these doctors on a conference call to consult and work out their differences?

Your rollercoaster of emotion is understandable and hopefully will pass as you gather more information.

I'm not writing this to scare you, or scare you into a surgery, but I just want to give you another view:  My bloodwork was fine; I had hardly any symptoms.  During a consult for a different matter, the surgeon recommended totally removing my thyroid because it was enlarged, would always need to be biopsied and would probably become a problem anyway.  Talk about vague!  And no other dr was talking about anything like this.  But I got the sense he was serious.  Well, he was absolutely on the ball!  Post-surgery pathology showed my thyroid was precancerous and just a couple of cells away from actual cancer.

I think you are wise to schedule another consultation.

My thoughts are with you.
