Mother and high blood pressure meds

by charlie37, Dec 08, 2007 04:57AM
My Mom age 85 blood pressure 150/80 many years taking Atenenol for about 10 years.Recently ,moved and changed doctors he wants additinal meds to be taken even though for the last 2 years I have acompanied her to her drs visits and always 150/80 and after 10 minutes it sometimes comes down to 135/80.
The new meds are 5 mg of amlodopine besylate .
I am concerned of er taking extra meds.
Is that B/P that high for an 85 year old?
And should I begin to let her take this extra  meds?
Thank You,
Charlen S.

my doctor states that as one gets older so does the b/p mine runs higher and it is ok i do know i have had problems when i change dr and meds for B/P
mine runs 163/84 down to 140/68  it fluxuates back and forth and since i have a low tolerance to meds they hate to change it i am 79 If my body was as sharp as my brain i would feel a lot better is your mom an active 85.  please note that i am not a doctor and not giving advice i am just repeating what mydoc says,my pressure has  been higher but then it goes back down  so do what you think you should or maybe some more ans will come in          lots luck to you and your mom                      jo

Blood pressure measurements have changed in recent years. The old standard for "perfect" blood pressure was always 120/80 with high blood pressure above 140/90.  Now the "perfect blood pressure is lower and 120.80 is considered to be pre-hypertensive.  Many doctors are changing medications for high blood pressure to come into line with the newest standards.   Most appointments are scheduled for 15 minutes, and are often too short to ask many questions, so when you make the next appointment, ask for a longer appointment that will allow for time to talk to the doctor about your concerns.  Write down all your questions so you won't forget to ask them.  Many times our minds are on the answer we just heard and the next question goes from our minds and we forget to ask.  Writing your questions down will allow you to cover all your questions and concerns.  good luck
