Chronic Phlegm

Can anyone make any suggestions.  My mom (86) has this problem with phlegm ...which worsens at night when she lays down.  She gets a thick mucus and spits for hours trying to get it up, or she says she will choke.  It interups her sleep, she also has it during the day, but it gets worse when she lays down.  Her general doctor tells her it is an age thing lots of people have it and other than musinex, and a few other treatments like a nose spray, nothing helps.  I've even told her to take an over the counter sleep aid.  She doesn't like to take it because she is tired the whole next day from taking it.
I took my mom to see an ENT and he said there is nothing wrong with her sinuses, and she should see a lung specialist.

Any info as to what this could be and how to give her some relief.    thanks.

Your mom could be having gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or a pulmonary cause of this accumulating mucus.  This sounds like chronic postnasal drip from your nose and sinuses, despite what the ENT said.  Your mom might benefit from nasal washes.  Please read our nasal wash treatment information at http://www.nationaljewish.org/disease-info/treatments/alt-ther/nasal-wash.aspx to learn more about this technique.

However, the ENT is right in suggesting that your Mom see a lung specialist because, if mucus collects in her bronchial tubes during the day, the force of gravity would bring it up into her throat at night.

Well you could try this herbal product for her .

http://mall.coimbatore.com/bnh/pankaja/pankajakasthuri.html

I took it for my excessive phelgm . It is always a problem with chronic bronchitis or asthma when goblet cells in the bronchial linings become irritated and produce too much mucus. The product has some mild peppers and stuff like cinammon in it . Take it by mixing it with water , sweet tasting due to sugar content . try and let me know the results...

I drink hot water to stop the mucus.

I have the same problem at age 38, and I am still trying to figure out what exactly it is. Here are some ideas, GERD, food allergy (she could get tested an at allergist) yeast allergy, and avoid dairy products and chocolate.
Hope this helps!
