Big dilemma

by kg17, Dec 08, 2007 03:42PM
Here is my dilemma for which I cannot seem to find a good solution.  I had Visian ICL implants put in my eye to correct for -17 diopters bilaterally.  I opted for the surgery because I could no longer tolerate contact lenses.  For six months post, I have had intracular pressures in the 22-23 range.  After full workup by glaucoma specialist at university, it is determined that I have significant transillumination defects from the lens rubbing against my iris.  The specialist concluded that I should be considered a "glaucoma suspect" and treated with pressure reducing drops.  Since then, I've consulted three other respected refractive surgeons, one of which says the Visian ICLs should be removed and the other two say to leave them in and have my eyes monitored.  I do not want to compromise the health of my eyes by leaving these implants in, however, if I take them out, I will need to consider either Veriseye implants, Lasik for part of my prescription, or clear lens exchange since glasses do not provide adequate correction for the myopia and I don't tolerate contact lenses well, partly due to dry eye (have aggressively treated it but little improvement).  I am 37 years old and want to do the best for my eyes, but I have had very differing opinions as to how to deal with the severe myopia and also minimize the risks to my eyes.  I have thoroughly researched each option, but still remained very confused as to what to do.  Looking for any suggestions, opinions, or thoughts.

I would put the most stock in what the glaucoma specialist thinks. If he/she is satisfied to leave the intraocular contact lens (ICLs) in the eye and treat the pressure with drops then that's what I would do.

Following you with serial visual fields and optic nerve OCT tests should detect glaucoma long before it causes any damage that you might be aware of.

This prevents opening the eye and does not subject you to the increased risk of retinal detachment that a clear lens exchange would.
