Skinny at 24 & can never seem to gain weight....

by metaldad904, Dec 10, 2007 06:58AM
Hello all,

I'm a 24 year old male, 6'0" tall & weigh between 128-135 lbs. on any given day.  I had always been on the smaller side when i was a kid up until my 2nd year in highschool.  At that point i decided i wanted to get "cut" so i started weight lifting constantly, and i mean constantly.  For a year and a half I would weight train about 5-6 days a week for several hours. I had already been the type that ate a lot & never gained any weight, but while doing this i was eating ridiculous amounts of food to bulk me up.  It worked for quite awhile, i went from 94 lbs to 178 lbs 3 months into my senior year of high school.  At that point i grew tired of the whole weight training world and pretty much burnt out.  I gave up all of that and started to go back to a more normal lifestyle.  While i still ate a lot, it was a bit more sensibly.  Within 2 months i shot down 152 lbs.  Everyone thought i was on drugs, but i figured it was just b/c of the lack of weight lifting.  After high school I continued a pretty normal lifestyle, got married, had a child.  I am somewhat active, but not that much really & eat constantly.  My wife would joke that she could never keep food in the house b/c she would go out for an hour and i would eat it all.  No matter how much i ate, i'd never gain an ounce.  I kept hearing this "once you get older your metabolism is going to stop & you're gonna get huge".  Well, now at 24 i'm beginning to wonder if this is ever going to happen.  I can't seem to do anything that will get me to gain anything at all.  I eat more, try to be less active & so on and nothing helps.  It's ridiculous, some days i'll be so busy I'll sometimes forget to eat till evening and look at the scale to see i've lost 5 pounds in one day.  I just don't get it, i really don't know what to do about it.  I've thought about trying to do weight lifting & such again, but these days its just harder b/c of working full time & such.  Should i use weight gainer supplements?  My friends have suggested that maybe i have a thyroid condition, is that a possibility?  I've had blood tests on me before & have always come back normal.  I just don't know what is going on, i've tried and tried....but nothing ever seems to help.  People think i'm some sort of drug addict or anorexic b/c i'm so skinny, which isn't the case.  I've even started drinking beer in hopes of getting some "empty calories" but that doesn't seem to be doing anything.  Does anyone have any suggestion or incite into what is going on with me?  Any help would be appreciated.
