Post-Knee Surgery: Incision

by escritoralaura, Dec 11, 2007 06:38PM
I had open knee surgery (proximal realignment with lateral release) about 10 days ago. I still have the tiny little bandages covering the incision, plus some gauze taped over it. I got the gauze wet in the shower today and went ahead and replaced it myself. I was a little alarmed to see (I hadn't seen it before, the last time anyone did was when the physical therapist took the dressing off one week ago) that there are some black spots, almost like a line down the incision, coming up through the little pieces of tape, and they look a bit raised. Now I am noticing some more pain around the incision site than I had had (but may be power of suggestion :)). Can someone advise whether this (appearance or random pain) is normal? I had not had any pain over the incision, in particular, to this point. Thanks.

Hi,
The pain around the incision site can be a normal phenomenon that can last upto  week. The appearance of black spots along the incision line probably shows some sign of skin breakdown.
Have an appointment fixed with the ortho surgeon.

Well, the physical therapist today assured me it was just dried blood. Didn't know it turned black like that! I see the ortho Friday anyway, so he can catch something out of place then if necessary.

The PT also informed me that sharp pains under/around the incision most likely just indicate minor nerves that were (as is inevitable) cut in the process. As they heal there are "growing pains."

Hi,
The pain around the incision site is mostly the scar pain and it would take about 3-6 months to settle down. If it is collected blood was the reason for the black spots then it should be of no concern. You can start massage of the scar gently which can help out in remodelling of the scar.
