Too many opinions

by 876, Dec 13, 2007 12:12AM
I was born with a heart murmur, like many people. When I was around 15 I was diagnosed with tricuspid regugitation due to a leaky valve. When I was born the murmur was level 1, but I never grew out of it. I'm now 25 and the murmur is now level 5 (I can feel the rumbling when I hold my hand above my chest).
I've had chest pains since as long as I can remember. These are sudden stabbing chest pains for no apparent reason. My doctors told me this was due to the heart issue. I was told I'd probably eventually have to have surgery to correct the tricuspid valve problem.
I recently changed doctors as I moved. My new doctor sent me to a new cardiologist who told me there is absolutely nothing wrong with me. He based this on a very short ekg (only a few seconds). He said yes, I do have a murmur, but that's nothing. I understand that a murmur might just be nothing to worry about, but why am I having chest pains?
Should I get a second opinion? This guy didn't seem to impress me, nor did he seem to impress his nurses. My doctor apparently told this doctor that I just need reassurance. Unfortunately, he failed horribly at reassuring me. If the heart problem doesn't exist, and I still have chest pains, what's wrong with me?
Another thing he completely ignored is some of my answers to his questions. He asked if my heart ever beat fast. It does when I do -anything-. According to all the research I've done, my heart should not pound out of my chest when I walk 4 yards - but it does. I'm also tired a lot of the time. I've gotten thyroid blood tests done and they've all come back fine.
I'm not a heart doctor. I have no idea what's wrong with me. I just want to know if I should get a second opinion. Or what could be wrong with me.

If I were you, I would definitely seek a second opinion (or third).  The fact that the two opinions are so differing is concerning.  Your new doctor could be right on the mark, but what if he's wrong?  I know that many murmurs can be "evaluated" by stethoscope, but I would insist on an echocardiogram to get the right answer once and for all.  Confirmation and reassurance may be all you need to feel better.

Good luck!
