Likelihood of transmission of molluscum contagiosum, warts, or other

Dear Doctor,

Thanks so much for this forum, we all appreciate it.  Here is my question:

I recently went to a massage parlor to see a sex worker.  During the session, I noticed that she had a small pinkish bump on her inner thigh, perhaps around 1.5-2.5 mm in diameter.  It was located perhaps 2-3 inches from the opening of her vagina.  I asked her about the bump because it made me very nervous and even asked to see it up close in the light.  She said that it had been there for about two months, did not hurt, did not puss, and did not change in shape or size.  It was too small for me to see any cauliflower-like textures or the dimple that I understand is characteristic of molluscum contagiosum.  It seemed smooth and kind of spherical-like.  It did not seem like a pimple/zit, because from the look of it, I could have just pinched it and ripped it from her leg.  Also, it did not seem "poppalble", i.e. if i squeezed I'm sure nothing would have come out like a pimple/zit.

As for what we did, we had condom-protected, missionary sex.  She also gave me a handjob (without the condom) to completion.  I'm fairly certain there was at least some concurrent touching between her hand and the "bump" on her thigh.  I am nervous, then, because of the indirect touching of her bump and my penis via her hand, as well as the sex because my thigh must have rubbed against hers at some point.

So my question, finally.  Can you tell or make a good guess from the above description what she had?  Also, how worried should I be about catching whatever she could have had (if anything) because of the sex/handjob?

Thank you again, this forum is great.

Genital warts don't occur on the thighs and molluscum usually causes multiple lesions, not just one.  Most likely she had a mole.  If in doubt, call her up and ask her.

There is no plausible risk to you from this.  STDs, including HPV, rarely are transmitted by handjobs.  Anyway, assuming you are otherwise sexually active, you already have been infected with one or more HPV strains.  Everybody gets it somewhere along the line, unless they spend their entire sexual lives in a mutually monogamous relationship with someone who also has never had another partner.  Warts aren't dangerous, only an inconvenience; and other HPV infections are pretty much meaningless, especially for men.  Same with molluscum contagiosum: an unpleasant but transient inconvenience with no serious health implications.

Bottom line:  Of course I cannot guarantee you don't have HPV, MC, or another STD, whether acquired during your massage parlor adventure or somewhere else.  But I see no cause for concern.  But if you remain nervous, you can always visit your personal health care provider or your local health department STD clinic for a check-up.

Thanks for the thanks about the forum.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD
