3 year old constantly following other children

by kmrubin, Dec 16, 2007 03:09PM
I have a 3 year old boy who is very social. About 3 months ago we noticed he would pick one child out and follow them around the entire time we were at any activity or when he was at preschool. Anything they are doing, my son has to do the same thing, if they fall, he falls, etc..

We just came back from a party and my son spend the entire party following around this one specific child (this other child did not seem to pay any attention to my son but that did not stop my son from following his every foot step). It as if nothing interests my son except for the child he has picked out and doing exactly what he is doing.

Is this normal? could this be a sign of OCD? He has recently been picked on and actually bullied at preschool by someone who used to be a good friend, could this have something to do with it? could it be a severe insecurity or anxiety due to what has been going in to him in school now being manifested in this following manner?

I am a bit worried and would truly appreciate any advice or suggestions.

My granddaughter does this.  She is almost three years old - she will choose a child with whom I think she feels comfortable and follows him/her around until it is time to go home.  I think she is just trying to be social and this is her way of interacting.  Our granddaughter does have some anxious moments but does not suffer from anxiety (and I know as our elder granddaughter suffers from severe anxiety).  My suggestion - just let it be as three-year olds are just learning how to socialize.
