I can't believe I spelled disaster incorrectly and did not correct that before punching the "post" button. Clearly I have developed mental dysfunction. That being said, I am going to make some suggestions regarding self-defense. The New Orleans catastrophe resulted in large numbers of people hered into a small area that was essentially devoid of police protection. FEMA and the New Orleans Police unconstitutionally disarmed everyone within their grasp, and in some cases, from my informants, that included pocket knifes. This led me to provide some advice on how to defend yourself in such a situation. The answer is one cane for every adult member of the family. Yup. The cane. Decades ago I wrote a pamplet titled "The Fighting Cane". Now there is quite a bit on the net. FEMA cannot prevent you from having a cane with you. Nor can the police. You simply plead medical necessity. To quote from a website "In ther hands of a skilled person a cane is a formidable weapon." Formable is an understatement. The usefullness of the can is overlooked and underestimated. There is no law against carrying a cane anywhere, anytime. You can get through any police line and into any shelter with a cane. I am going to quote from one of the sites on cane fighting. "The best cane should be thoroughly seasoned straight-edged hickory, tapered like a billiard cue, about 1 1/2 inches at the butt, down to 3/4th of an inch at the point. The butt should be ended in a heavy metal knob of brass, silver or steel. My personal cane has a specially machined stainless steel "T" handle. Swung from the other end this is as effective in bringing down an opponent as a fire axe. The web sites do not recomment "T" handles, because they can become entangled in clothing. In an encounter the face is a good target, however the solar plexus and a point-trust to the stomach is extremely effective. You really need an instructor, however any basic fencing manual will provide you with what you need to know. A cane is an excellent self-defense means for a woman. In Europe, the single-stick is used, as it has been for decades, as a preliminary step in learning to use the sabre. If you carry a single-stick cane with a rounded head, I recoommend you drill a hole and attach a long leather thong. When the thong is wrapped around your wrist the cane cannot be knocked from your hand. My personal preference is for the cane to be as long as possible. You can easily subdue three unarmed opponants with a cane, and easily defend youself against a knife attack. The key, as the manuals state, involves side-steps, advandes, retreats, and movements exercised with rapidity and force. The  hard point-trust into the solar plexus is the preferred blow, and it will disable the strongest of opponants.

The idea of having a cane may seem silly, however whenever large groups of people are confined and food and water is scarce, you can expect trouble. And the policy of FEMA, and most police departments, is to completely disarm refugees, to include separating them from their mace, their tasers, all their knives, nightsticks, and all legitimately owned and licensed firearms and ammunition. That is a sorry situation to be in when you have a family to protect.

I studied Emergency Management as part of my graduate liberal studies program...

Get yourself a Maglight flashlight.  You'll pay about $40.  I carry mine when I walk the dogs.

They are heavy and you can knock the **** out of somebody with one.  The handle is perfect for cracking a head open.

Guess what--it is probably the flashlight rescuers and the American Red Cross will have as well.
