jerking eyes

by scajudens1, Dec 16, 2007 05:06PM
I have a question about a boy that I aide 1 on 1. He is in a special needs class for several different reasons but his main need is because he is considered to have "siezures". He supposedly takes medication for this but as far as I know, it is not administered at school. He has been in this class for almost a year and being new and also a nurse, I asked as many questions as I could about my new assignment. Apparently, the only signs he has and that anyone has ever seen him have which happens on a daily basis and more than once a day, and,  is the sole reason he takes siezure medication is,  eye jerking (Nystagmus?). Can this be right? As far as I know, Nystagmus could be caused by many different things, but siezure medication being one of them. So could he be being treated with the very thing that is causing the problem? I'm feeling like this could possibly be one of the problems he has with his behavior, the real issue isn't being dealt with and possibly on a strong med not really needed. I do notice that before his eye jerking episodes happen, he gets very flush and withdrawn, and immediately after, he turns bright red and feels slightly angry and wants to be left alone for a few minutes. His eye jerking episodes last for no more than about 5-7 sec. at a time and happen a few times a day.
Any insight into eye jerking would be helpful as I don't know much about it or its side affects other than what I have read about on the net which has been minimal. I would like to help this little guy or at least be able to understand what he is going through a little better. Any insight would be much appreciated!

There is no specific medication to treat nystagmus. Some medications can cause side effects that include nystagmus. Nystagmus is sometimes a part of medical conditions that these medications are used for (in other words the nystagmus was there before the medicine was prescribed).

Your concern is commendable and I suggest that you discuss your observations with the parents and perhaps get their permission to talk directly with the childs neurologist.
