Son has cough, now rash

My 13-year-old son has had a rash all over his for the past two days. he has had a bad cough for four days and we gave him some cough medicine two days ago, so we thought the rash was a reaction (hives) to the medicine. Now this morning one of the neighbor kids in my son's class also has a rash over his body. Any idea if these kids have something contagious?
