Weight Training muscle/bone injury

by Hiker123, Dec 18, 2007 10:04AM
Question:
Is it possible to cause a fracture resulting from a shoulder press exercise?

What happened?
I was on my last set of shoulder presses on the smith machine (doing 185lbs) when I felt and heard something pop near the upper chest toward my neck/collar bone. Right now I feel periodic discomfort and dull pain...any thoughts?

Hi Hiker,
Is your name Hiker or is that you hike your weights for shoulder press and other exercise soon, hence you have kept the name Hiker.
Possible fracture after shoulder press could be at clavicle, scapula, lower back and elbow joint also.
If you have heard some popping sound during the exercise that can be normal, but that associated with periodic discomfort and dull pain calls for an evaluation.
Have you met any specialist? Have you done any imaging of the shoulder to see for fractures?
I think you should be consulting an orthopaedician and discuss with him regarding the further plan of management.
I think you need to take rest and do passive range of motion exercises around shoulder joint.
Hope this helps.
Keep me informed about your consultation.
Hope this helps.
Happy holidays to you and your family.
