Baby's pupils

by Mrs06chris, Dec 19, 2007 07:27PM
My 2 month old son's pupils are a long oval shape. What could this be? He seems to see fine. Thank you

I'm sorry but I would have to see them in detail to give you any useful information.  It could just be the angle from which you are looking.  If you really think that they are not round - then you could start by having your pediatrician take a look at them to see what he/she thinks.  There are some conditions that can cause irregulary shaped pupils - but I'm a little confused about this one with both eyes being oval shaped.   See pediatrician and then depending on what he/she says, consider seeing pediatric ophthalmologist if your doctor thinks it is warranted.

I took him in to the doctor today and he may have coloboma of the eyes. He's being sent to a specialist. Can you tell me if all cases of coloboma affect seeing or is there hope?

Colobomas of the eye can be small and minor or large and involving multiple areas of the eye.  If minor - there is still good chance of good vision.  If coloboma is very large and involves more parts of eye (retina, optic nerve) then the vision could be worse.  I don't want to say  more because we don't know what we're dealing with yet.  I wish you well.
