csf leak and a scope

What is the best way to detect a possible csf leak from the nose? Is a scope thru the nose a good way? Does it hurt? And how dangerous to my body is it to have a csf leak can it cause damage?

Hi.

A malfunction or infection, of the ventriculoperitoneal shunt would usually result in symptoms such as fever, headache, convulsions, and drowsiness.

Usually, a subcutaneous compressible bulb and one-way valve in series with the intracranial and abdominal ends of the shunt are used to monitor the function of the VP shunt.

You can discuss this more with your physician.

Hope this helps.

My symptoms are facial swelling and extreme head pressure, facial numbness, pins and neeedles feeling in my face, stiff neck, and shoulders my arms go numb and tingle all the way to my finger tips. And I have a icy hot cold feeling in my throat and mouth. I will get clear liquid come drippping out my nose on days when I have really bad pressure. I have Pseudotumor cerbri and have a vp shunt placed.
What test is done to check if a VP shunt is working? How can you tell?

Hi Layla-

I was diagnosed with CSF leak this week by CT cisternogram. They did a pre-CT scan, then wheeled me into another room where they injected some sort of dye into my lower spine area with the aid of some sort of machine called a flourscopy (sp). Then the fun part: they strapped my feet into these little canvas booties that were strapped to the foot end of the table, set these adjustable metal shoulder pads against my shoulders, then tipped the table on its end to where I was practically upside down! They did this to send the dye to my head. Once the radiologist decided there was enough dye in my head, they wheeled me back over to the CT room and took some more pictures of my brain.

The results were made available to my referring ENT within 2 hours, who called me with a CSF leak diagnosis while I was still at the hospital! There's another message board for CSF leaks at http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=126&order=desc. I learned about a lot of different methods used to try to diagnose CSF leak. Based on my research of the literature, CT cisternogram is the most accurate method for identifying the location of the leak.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi.

What are the symptoms that you have been experiencing which might suggest the presence of a csf leak?

Nasal endoscopy after an intrathecal fluorescein injection is optimal in finding a leak. There would be some discomfort when the procedure is done but nothing serious.

Other procedures such as MRI, CT scan, and plain radiography may not be as sensitive in diagnosing this condition.

A csf leak should be considered dangerous and potentially life-threatening. The risk of meningitis for those with csf leak approaches 88% (Brodie HA, Thompson TC.  Management of complications from 820 temporal bone fractures.  Am J Otol 1997;18:188-197) which is why early identification and treatment should be done.

Hope this answers your queries.
