My toddler is eating too much

by heatherenke, Dec 21, 2007 02:41PM
I am 28 years old and 130lbs. and my husband in 31 and is 185lbs. We try to eat healthy. I breast fed my son until he was almost 18 months old. When he was 4 months old, he was 20 lbs. (born at 8.7lbs). He was a really fat baby! We all thought it was cute. Now he is 2 1/2 and is almost 40 lbs. He is in the 90% for height and the 95% for weight. He wakes up at night wanting chocolate and says "eat" when he wakes up in the morning, almost everyday. He eats around 300 calories for breakfast (high fiber cereal, fruit etc.) and then is fine for about 2-4 hours. He eats a good sized lunch - probably 400-500 calories and probably 400-500 for dinner. That's okay, I believe, but it's the in-between stuff that worries me. He always asks for more and we talk about eating "baby bites". Every time we are at a church party, at someones house, or at the grocery store, he throws a huge fit because he wants food to eat. He will eat almost anything. (He doesn't always clear his plate, but most of the time he does).  I have decided not to take him food shopping with me anymore (but everywhere you go, there is gum and candy bars in line!)- I can't take him to my friend's house because he will scream for anything he can see that is to eat. My parents live down the street and I feel like we can't hardly go down there because he wants to eat chicken, ice cream, apples, whatever he can find and it's a fight everyday, even though I'm trying to avoid/ignore the situations/behavior. If there is food in the house, he finds it. He found some halloween candy in his sister's room and was hiding in the closet eating it. He eats food in the trash. I don't want him to have an eating disorder. Is this something he can grow out of? I'm trying not to keep "offender" foods in the house, but he'll eat anything! Is this a serious problem, or just "his way" of eating?

Take him to a doc. and check our Prader-Willis syndrome, at least rule that out, but in the meantime, you sound like a wonderful mommy that is doing the right things. Best of luck to you and your little one.
