Gout & Atenolol

HI--My husband is 46 years old and has had gout for approximately 6 years on and off. This year his gout has been the worst. He has been on prednisone 10 times this year. This year he was diagnosed with high blood pressure and was placed on Atenolol. Is there any connection with being on Atenolol and getting gout so many times this year. This last bout with gout he was given a total of 33 predisone tablets and after decreasing and finally finishing the prescription two days later the gout returned. He has not been eating any meat, including chicken, shellfish, no tomato sauces, doesn't drink alcohol and has been taking Cherry drink concentrate daily. So, the only thing that has really changed is taking the Atenolol.

I'm new to the forum and was researching leg muscle pain taking atenolol and noticed your question. You never mentioned what your husbands uric acid level is.  I hope by this time, your husband's doctor put him on 100 mg allopurinol. For the past 15 years, I've been treated for gout, taking atenolol and allopurinol, and have not had another episode. Instead of the prednisone, he should try Aleve (naproxsin).
