Necrotic fat in reconstructed breast

by Lee1945, Dec 24, 2007 09:23PM
Is necrotic fat in a reconstructed breast harmful?  I had my mastectomy and TRAM reconstruction  in June of 2007.  Removal of necrotic fat and nipple construction in October 2007.  In October all of the necrotic tissue was not removed as it would cause a deformity.  Now it seems as if more has returned.  Is this possible?  Should this be removed or can it stay there forever with no problems?

Hi,
You need to get a clinical evaluation and a consultation with your breast surgeon. If the necrotic tissue is large and spreading, then it would need to be removed and the breast reconstruction surgery done again.
On the other hand if the necrotic tissue is small, not causing any symptoms, is not infected and if your surgeon advises you a conservative approach, then you can just carry on with the regular breast self exams and periodic evaluation by a physician.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
