Hi, I took metformin for almost two years. It helped me lose weight but you need to have blood work done about every 3 months to make sure it's not harming you. I got really sick and couldn't eat for a week. I went to the doctor and they told me to get off the meds because it was damaging my liver. So it works for pcos but you need to be careful. I wouldn't drink a lot of liquor while on this medication. Hope this helps.

I had a miscarriage 2 yrs back & so far couldn't get pregnant. I went for  testings last month & had prolactin, TSH, T4, T3 , fasting glucose testing and all are normal. I had insulin testing with fasting glucose too & insulin level is very high. Doctor scan me through out a month & found that my egg was maturing but didn't break at last. Also there're small cysts (noncancerous) there fore I have PCOS. Both high insulin level & small cysts in ovaries (which call poly cystic ovaries -PCO) make more male hormone- androgen & disrupt the ovulation. So, doctor ask me to have metformin, low dose aspirin up to the 2nd month of pregnancy only & clomid (only 5 days after the period). I have to take everyting under the doctor's supervision. She'll do all the required testings & ultra sound scanning through out the therapy till i have a baby. After that I'll have to take a medication according to the condition. Metformin is to reduce insulin level & it'll make cells more sensitive to the insulin, it'll reduce the weight, reduce miscarriage too. It's  very important to have a balance healthy diet (carbohydrate with fiber and less sugar, fruits, more green veges & verity of veges, nuts ect.), avoid all sugary unhealthy foods, walking & been active to control high insulin level. Sometimes high insulin level can be the fact to have PCOS. By controlling insulin  can avoid PCOS too. Low dose of Aspirin will reduce the risk of getting high blood pressure. High blood pressure will effect to blood vessels & increasing the risk of miscarriage & sometimes the death of the mother. Clomid helps to ovulate only risk is the multiple birth. It's very important have an expert advise to have medication in any condition as those will effect in different ways in different people. Be relax, Been stress make insulin resistance & PCOS worse.

I am just wondering what all Metformin will do for me. I have PCOS and have been trying to concieve for about two years now. I have recently been put on birth control to regulate my periods after taking Provera and Femara for two months with no luck. My Dr. prescibed Metformin for me a few months ago, but for some reason I never took it. So I am taking birth control and am going to start taking the Metformin tomorrow (Monday) and my ultimate goal is to loose tons of weight, and have regular periods. Hopefully after this works out, I can stop taking birth control and get pregnant on my own. What does everyone think? Any suggestions or comments? I'm new to this site so anything would help out. Thanks! :0)

I was prescribed Metformin after being diagnosed with PCOS about a year and a half ago.  The Metformin did help me lose some weight but I did have to diet and exercise.  The Metformin did seem to help me lose weight quicker.  Before the Metformin, I was losing weight EXTREMELY slow even with diet and exercise.  When I first started taking the Metformin, I had to cut out ALL sweet food from my diet because the food would make me very nauseous when taken with the Metformin.  I am currently going through infertility treatment and am doing clomid 'cycles' while taking Metformin to get pregnant.  I have just completed two clomid cycles and am not pregnant yet.  I would recommend taking the Metformin as it helped me (especially with the weight).  :)

I have been taking 500mg metformin 3xs a day for 1 year. I drop the weight when I eat right and exercise. If I sliped out of my new eating style I didnt gain back 7 pounds at one time. I have PCOS and all my inital tests came back negative. I've read in the posts that I should be having regular tests done for monitoring. I have had none except for the inital glucose testing - I'm not diabetic and other than PCOS and weight (I gained a LOT) I'm healthy so far. I recently started to feel really bloated. Anyone get that way on Metformin? I know my weight of 248 doesn't help (BTW I'm down from 275 woohoo). I appreciate your feed back. My Boyfriend just doesn't understand and he wants me to stop taking the metformin because he thinks it will make me diabetic or hurt my organs. Anyone ever hear of that? :( Let me know. Thanks!
