Urgent Query on brain clot

by Dinesh12, Dec 30, 2007 10:11AM
My son has met with a serious car accident 15 days back leading to severe clot in brain. Doctors have successfully removed the clot but he has not regained consiousness till now. On GCS scale he is on 4. Doctors saying that his pupils have dilated but his eyes are moving left and right sometimes. His hands move a little when we pinch him. He is on 50% ventilator support and doctors remove the ventilator support for 5-6 hours in a day. My question is how long does it usually take to regain consiousness and when will the dilated pupils get fine and what are its side effects?

I am so sorry to hear about your son.   This sounds like a serious injury to his brain from what you are describing.   From the examination  that you described and his examination, it seems like he has sustained very serious damage.   It is not a very good sign that he is still not awake enough to respond consciously after 15 days.   Some of what he does may not be conscious at all but may be a reflex.   You should have the doctors explain to you in layterms exactly how much of his brain is still intact (not damaged) from CT and MRI scans and how much they think he could still recover.   They would not give you unrealistic hopes but will also be sensitive.

Depending on what they think is going on, they will be able to say if and when he will regain consciousness and how impaired he may be as a result of this injury.   You have to listen to what they say very carefully and trust them.

I wish you luck.
