22 and a little concerned, if not worked up!

by KathrynSmith, Jan 01, 2008 04:08PM
I'm 22 years old and approximately 6 months ago I went into urinary retention, although the cause was unknown. There was no renal calculi seen and the consultant was going to organise tests as an outpatient, however, as things improved, I didn't really feel they were necessary and so cancelled the appointment. However, now I am having difficulty passing urine again, sometimes I just can't go or only go and little and don't feel that I have completely emptied my bladder. I'm just concerned because when I was first admitted to hospital they said that MS couldn't be ruled out. I have some involuntary leg spasms, although these aren't regular.
Anyone got any ideas?! Am I just worrying too much?!

I haven't seen you post before, so let me welcome you to the MS Forum.

Urinary retention is nothing to sneeze at.  You can have what they call Neurogenic Bladder caused from things other than MS.  I also wouldn't rule out a thorough follow-up with a urologist.

Your leg spasms AND your bladder problems suggest to me that they might have the same cause.  Is it MS?  Only a doctor can tell you, after thorough testing.

Why did they admit you to the hospital if you don't mind me asking?  And what testing was done?

Possibly your Primary Care Doctor can set you up some appointments with a Urologist or a Neurologist.  More testing definitely needs to be considered.

With MS, you would normally have more than 24-48 hours worth of symptoms.  Is this what is happening to you or do you only have occasional problems?  MS usually starts as a relapsing/remitting course, with symptoms lasting at least 48 hours and sometimes continuous for weeks.  Then the symptoms totally abate. Only to return at another time.

Perhaps you can give us some more information about what has been going on with you, so we are better able to give you our advice.  Of course, you know that we cannot diagnose anyone, but can give you advice about what doctor's you may need to be seeing.

Again, welcome Kathryn....

Heather
