head banging

by MomofMattandWill, Jan 02, 2008 10:17AM
My son is 22 months old.  He is a sweet, loving child.  He occasionally hits us out of frustration, but I believe his hitting is an ordinary reaction to his anger and we discipline him with time out and sorry with hugs following. That has really been the only hurdle until recently.   He has begun to have awful temper tantrums and he bangs his head on the floor.  He bangs his head very hard and it scares the heck out of me.  I try to ignore the tantrum to not give him attention, but when he bangs his head I have to go make sure he's OK, which I guess is reinforcing the banging.  I just don't know how to stop this and I'm very concerned there is an underlying problem.  Is this "normal" behavior and what can I do to stop it?
Thanks.

While it can be hard to believe, it is a version of normal. Your response is OK. It will not be reinforcing if all you do is move him to a place (e.g., crib, carpeted area) where it is safer for him. Just refrain from interacting with him very much when you do this. Over time you will see this behavior disappear.
