BRCA2 Positve

by Futineil, Jan 03, 2008 06:13AM
Hi I was diagnosed positive with the BRCA 2 gene 3years ago, and have to say that I have an absolutely marvelous team of medical personnel that offer constant support and advice when ever I need it. I chose not to go for the preventative surgery as to date I am only 37yrs old. I am now under going regular screening , and blood tests to measure my CA125 levels and am also taking part in a voluntary ovarian screening study. However upon asking this question numerous times I am still confused as to whether I am still able to carry a donor card. I have been given neither a definate yes or no...but only confirmation that "they" would find out for me.  I would greatly appreciate any assistance here. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi , what kind of doner card do you mean?

by Futineil, Jan 03, 2008 11:29AM
Hi thanks for the response...I mean organ donation in the event of my death which hopefully won't be for a many number of years yet. Ideally I would like to register so that eventually I may be able to help others , but having the BRCA2 mutation confuses me as to whether my organs would be ok to donate.

WOW......is all I can say.  You talk about your own death as if it was imminent?  Thats really bizarre and sorry to say, a bit morbid.  Just becuase you have this gene doesnt mean you ARE going to get cancer.  Yes, you may have a higher chance than some, but you are a healthy young woman......WHAT IN THE WORLD MAKES YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING TO DIE???????
Stange......please find peace in knowing you are healthy.......my BRCA test came back negative....and I do (did)have ovarian cancer.....and I have a more optomisitc look on the future than you do.........wow.

Yes, you can be an organ donor.  Most people who have been organ donors have never been genetically tested. My mother died of ovarian cancer and they were able to use her corneas and some skin for a burn victim.  They say you can't have active cancer now, but even that is not an absolute.  If you have brain cancer and it has not spread to other organs you can donate.  Just sign your drivers license donor card or other document and the Drs will determine your suitability to be a donor when that time comes in the far distant future.
This is a quote from the following website,   "...There are few absolute exclusions (HIV positive, active cancer, systemic infection)..."

I still think you are being to obsessive about this considering you did this post in January, you did one almost identical yesterday and you have done a journal on the same topic.  Just learn to let this go and don't let it control your life so much.
