HELP!! Neurectomy Complications...any info?

by djbds, Jan 03, 2008 04:30PM
In late 2004, I suffered a severe direct right inguinal hernia...repaired in Jan 2005. A few months later, a direct left inguinal hernia was discovered...repaired in April 2005. I developed a rare case of neuralgia/neuropathy as a result of both herniorapphies. After massive amounts of different medications were used in attempts to alleviate some of that pain and 2 bi-lateral inguinal nerve blocks were performed, I was still left with the severe pain.

After a consultation with my treating surgeon and a few other physicians, I was advised to proceed with an inguinal neurectomy. The inguinal neurectomy procedure was performed on February 22, 2006. I was told after the surgery that my ilio-inguinal and genital-femoral nerves were completely removed, however, my ilio-hypogastric was too entangled in a granuloma in proximity to the inguinal canal. There was apparently too high of a risk to remove the hypogastric nerve, so it was left untouched.

After my post-op pain eventually wore off, I began developing some extreme pain in different areas in my groin and thighs. That was almost two years ago. The pain has developed into something much more...now the pain has spread through my entire left and right inguinal area, lower right abdomen, right hip and lower back, right front and inner thigh, and my entire genital area.

The pain is extreme, comes on frequently, and has destroyed my quality of life.

Recently, I found out that the neurectomy did not happen as it was told to me originally. The ilio-inguinal nerve WAS removed, however, the genital-femoral nerve was never clearly identified yet some piece of nerve they could not identify was severed, and the ilio-hypogastric nerve was NEVER found...contrary to the statement they made that it was too entangled in scar tissue to remove safely.

I am looking for ANYBODY who has ANY information about neurectomies. If you have had a neurectomy, I would like to know about your experience. If you know about neurectomy complications, PLEASE, I need to know!!! I AM DESPERATE FOR INFORMATION!!!!

PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me anytime regarding neurectomies...and if you have any questions or comments about my situation, please write.
