birth control pill

I recently had my second child (November 2, 2007). After my 6-week post-partum checkup, I went back on the pill (Ortho-tricyclen). After 8 pills, my husband and I had sex. We had not had sex since the birth of my son. Before starting the pill, I had not had a period post-partum yet. I am now concerned that there may be a chance for pregnancy since I did not use back-up protection.

After 8 days on the pill, was I protected from pregnancy even though I had not had a period? What are the chances that a pregnancy could occur? I am sure the odds are slim, but I'm still concerned since are done having children.

Hello,

Yes, you should be adequately protected after 8 days on the pill (assuming you missed none and took them relatively at the same time each day).

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
