4.5 year old moods

by Nebula77, Jan 04, 2008 11:36AM
My son is almost 4.5 and he is a bit moody.  My mom says "Oh, he's just like you were."  (I am now 30 years old and wondering if I have some bipolar issues along with SAD and all my conditions).  But my son is just negative sometimes.  When he woke up this morn., I went to his bed and hugged him and told him how happy I was when he was born, how much I love him, how happy he makes us all, etc.  Then he seemed worried and got so negative and down.  Usually I can get him back in a good mood by talking about pleasant stuff, but just not lately.  My husband keeps saying he's normal, but he doesn't see him all day like me, and he never took Childhood Psychology or any college classes on therapy like I have.

And on top of it all, I have been very ill for months since our new baby was born.  I have been waiting for months to see specialists for rheumatology and pain clinics.  I know it wears on my family when I am so sick, and I wish it wasn't so.  I have even had ambulance rides from home from severe chest pain/ fainting, so I know it's been traumatic for my son.  After I got sick, he started talking about his stomach hurting and this "red flower in his stomach that turns and turns and has a fin on it that hurts him."  I had him draw the flower at one point, and the flower even changes and sometimes it's green with carrots on it.  (He's very creative).

But my son's preschool teachers have NEVER suggested anything abnormal with his moods- they just said he talks a ton and now his teacher for afternoon pre-K says he's just a wonderful boy.  I just don't know what is normal for 4 year old moods/talkativeness.  Wouldn't there be more flags if it was bipolar?  Is this worth checking out further with his pediatrician or am I just paranoid?  Thank you so much.
