Distorted Shapes

by cadmanx, Jan 05, 2008 03:33AM
Hello all!

Here is my problem.  I have never worn glasses before and recently had an eye exam.  I was diagnosed with severe keratoconus and astigmatism.  My doctor said I need contacts but I could try glasses.  Here is my prescription.

OD sphere: -0.5   cyl: -5.00  axis 070
OS sphere: -0.5   cyl: -6.00  axis 095

My problem is this, I am seeing shapes shrunk horizontally with my glasses.  So circles are looking more like ellipses, and squares are looking like rectangles.  Is there a problem with my glasses, and is there another way of writing my prescription to solve this problem?

This is really bothering me, my widescreen monitor is looking more like a normal 4:3!

I would highly appreciate any response, thank you for your time. :)

I forgot to say, I do not have any other problem, no aberation problems or anything, just shapes shrunk horizontally.

You need a consult with a Eye MD physician corneal specialist ophthalmologist. EyeMD

You can find one at www.aao.org

Just looking at that prescription most eye MDs would have gone straight to ridgid contact lens.

By the way was it an optometrist you saw and did you buy the glasses from him/her?

The optometrist did say I should get RGP contacts but I insisted on trying glasses first.  I the price of contacts was more than I could afford at the moment.  I don't want to use contacts unless I absolutely need them.

I ordered my glasses online and they work great, no headaches, and I can see clearly.  Seems the prescription is right on.  Only problem is I am getting that annoying horizontal shrinking.

Thanks.

It the horizontal shrinking is part of the glasses being "great" then I'm glad you're happy.

I simply wanted to know if you think this is a problem that can be corrected.  Or is this always how I will see through glasses.

And will thinner index lenses help correct this problem.  Thanks
