HIV NAAT testing

I performed oral sex on a guy on a recent Friday night (actually..Saturday morning around 1am).  He didn't *** in my mouth.  The next Monday/Tuesday I started feeling bad - I had a fever for about a day as high as 102. I had a sore throat. I had a very short-term rash on my torso, but it only covered a small area underneath my pecs, and it only lasted less than one day.  I have been really tired, and have been sleeping a lot.  I got STD testing done, and had some preliminary treatment just in case.  It also had an HIV NAAT test done.  This was on Wednesday evening after the sexual contact.  I got diarrhea that Wed evening that lasted a few days.  I've still been tired, and my throat hasn't been normal since - it has not been sore, but looks very swollen and has white streaks; it actually looks like strep throat, but a rapid strep test came back negative.  Was it too early to get an HIV NAAT test done then?  It was about 4 3/4 days after possible exposure.  Does this sound like anything else?  Maybe mono?

Yes, a negative NAAT test after one month is conclusive. However, all medical providers recommend getting an antibody test after 3 months.

No Risk, acquiring HIV by oral sex requires certain conditions which is near impossible.

1. One has to have gapping wound and /or pathetic oral condition and it has to contact blood for any risk

2. Consumption of semen is not the right mechanism of HIV transmission

3. Saliva doesn't contain HIV

hence jalpasca, all your symptoms were in no way related to HIV, they  are all due to anxiety. Yes, anxiety can cause every single thing that you have described in your post, try googling "symptoms of anxiety" and you'd see all your symptoms there and you don't require ny testing further for this incidence try to get some counseling and del with your anxiety. HIV is not the problem here, no way !

So if someone is tested with the NAAT close to 2 months after exposure does the 3 month rule still apply?

You were at no risk for HIV. The risk is not non-existent, but it's so minimal that the chances of you getting hit by lightning this winter is greater.

To answer your specific question, yes it was too early to test with NAAT. NAAT testing is conclusive after one month. However, some people will show a positive result by day 4 on the NAAT if they have in fact been exposed.
