Complementary Medicine Community

This forum is for questions and support regarding acupuncture, chiropractic, dietary supplements, herbal remedies, homeopathy, naturopathic medicines and treatments.

WHAT IS COMPLEMENTARY & ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE (CAM)?
Complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine. An example of a complementary therapy is using aromatherapy to help lessen a patient's discomfort following surgery.

Alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. An example of an alternative therapy is using acupuncture instead of surgery for back pain that has been recommended by a conventional doctor.

Temperomandibular Joint Syndrome

Someone has suggested I try going to a chiropractor to try to relieve my TMJ pain.  Has anyone had any success with this?

Hi Pam

Yes - I have TMJ also and went to 3 dentists, one of whom made a night guard that made the TMJ worse.  Then I saw an ENT doctor who really was not any help at all.  Finally out of desperation I went to see a Chiropractor and after 6 "adjustments" my TMJ was 90% better.  It has been 15 years and I still have not had a problem. The only thing I will say about chiropractors is that they want you to continue going for adjustments forever - I stopped after my 6th adjustment and have not needed to go back.

Hope this helps
Michael

Hi,
I have had bad TMJ for a really long time and would strongly suggest also trying accupuncture to help relieve the pain. Mine hasn't gone away permanently but the treatment really helps control it.
Good luck.

I have TMJ really bad too.  I haven't tried a chiropractor for it, but would really love to know if it helps.  If you do decide to try it, please post back and let me know if it helps.  I have flair-ups and sometimes my night guard helps and sometimes it don't.  I always have a knot on the left side of my neck right at the joint, and below my ear.  Doctors, ENTs, and dentists all say it is inflamation from the TMJ.  The pain is SEVERE at times.  I would LOVE to find something to help.

pgb my girlfriend just found a chiro that helped her with her jaw too.  not all are the same so investigate.  i bet if you mix chiro,  massage,  and a proper fitting splint you will feel much better! the only problem is the expense.

The chiropractor has helped me also.  I go back occassionally when it bothers me again.  But he has helped me.
